Martin Seligman, an extremely influential psychologist, pioneered the discipline of “Positive Psychology,” which studies happiness and well being. In an interview on British television a few years ago, he was asked, “Isn’t happiness really about being selfish?” He answered, “Not at all. In fact, if you are having a bad day, do something nice for someone else.” Generous people are happy people.
It is not unusual for wealthy people to do great things for their communities, and receive significant recognition. For example, Rockefeller Center in New York City is world renowned. However, Christ presents in Matthew 6 these words of caution. “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. … But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
KEN wants to help you be successful in all areas of business and your personal life, but we also want to help you discover the joy of service. KEN chapters select local non-profits that are doing amazing things, and we help them by investing our time and money. Working together we can accomplish much more than we can individually. Some of my closest friendships developed in contexts of serving together.
